The country’s rice project (GRP), under the ministry of agriculture, recently distributed Nerica rice seeds and fertilisers to farmers in the Central Baddibu District in the North Bank Region (NBR) of the country. The recipient communities include Busura, Kinteh Kunda, Karantaba, Marong Kunda, Nduren and Jammeh Kunda.

The agricultural extension officer for Njaba Kunda region, Sana Singhateh, said that farmers who received the assistance have seen a substantial rise in the total land cultivation from 730 hectares of Nerica rice cultivation in ‘09 to 1195 hectares this year. Furthermore, Singhateh attributed the increase in the number of men aspiring to become rice farmers to the vital endeavours of the GRP. The increased involvement of men in agriculture is likely to ensure greater food security in rural households.

Singhateh thanked both the NBR agricultural directorate and also the farmers of Central Baddibu for responding positively to the initiative.
